1984 volvo 240gl stuck in flood

Postby stereotypical » Tue Dec 18, 2012 8:23 am

hey fellas,

GUess what, i was driving my father in laws old 1984 volvo 240gl last nite, and got caught in a massive flood in fooking klang, car died while trying to go tru the flood, tried to start it but it wouldnt luckily there a was a tow truck there and helped us out, water was almost thigh high in certain parts!

so we towed it back to our place, question is my bro told me to
1.change engine oil
2. change gearbox oil
3. take out spark plugs and turn over engine
4. dry out air filter

question is...is it possible to take out the spark plugs and turn engine over??

what else should i do ? worried there might be some damages to the engine.
anymore stuff to change before we crank the car? any expert in engines here care to share some input?

damn floods ..... sigh....

- i managed to drown my dad's 240 in the sea (yes) when we used to use it to tow our boat.

- sea level up to roof of car.

- long story , but the car lived.

- all fluid change (including fuel in tank) , and you'd need to be afraid of water in the intake / combustion chamber (hydrolock = bend con-rods , etc). Yes , remove plugs and turn over many times whilst squirting engine oil into cylinders.

- you will begin to get dead wheel-bearings , etc , in the long run.

remove spark plug and start the engine.. or crank it.. it will remove water from the head and piston block.. put engine oil into the cylinder from the spark plug hole.. then crank it again..

wahhh drown in sea........ini sudah macam topgear! :P

how do u know if there's any water in the combustion chamber? any symptoms to look out for?

we managed to change the engine oil, dried out the air filter, didnt take out the spark plugs tho, but the car fired up smoothly and drove it around so far so good. [-O<

should i take it to a mechanic tho? just to be sure?

Water will definitely get into the combustion chamber. That's why you have to remove all sparkplugs and crank the engine to push the water out thru the plug hole. Change the transmission and differential oil, also brake fluid, coolant. Lucky you didn't hydrolock the engine - bent conrod etc. tough brick

if water never enter the combustion area or just too small amount.. then the flood you are in is not so deep.. i guess volvo intake is higher than my alfa..

hehhehehe wiring switch to wipers are shot redy, whenever the car is turned on the wipers cant be switched off........so i pulled out the connector to the switch box.............

the flood was pretty deep, as i was driving it suddenly went deeper till the water was at the radiator level above the front bumpers, i think thats wat caused the car to stall, water going into the air intake.......... and with the waves caused by trucks passing by,there was definitely water goinng into the exhaust as well. Then rain started pouring even more and the water level reached near my lower thigh.......... there was plenty of cars stalling there, was really chaotic! such a crazy experience.........fun and worrying at the same time. ^:)^

took the car to the mechanic dy, all good yo! \:D/ .....thanks bro's for the advice! :) volvo's are tanks la!

pistole...which sea did u drown ur dads volvo anyways ? =D>

maybe there is water in the switch... open the switch from the dashboard and air spray the thing.. or just air spray the thing there if you have a air compressor nearby..
