Fiat Punto Mk1 (97') jerking issue

Postby p0oopy » Tue Jan 15, 2013 1:52 pm

Hello guys,

I'm an owner of a year 1997 fiat punto(A) selecta. But I've been battling with the jerking issue ever since I got the car 2-3 years back. I've sent my car to emech before, and hands down one of the best fiat mechanic I had so far. But we have a communication barrier because I can only speak Malay or English.

But anyway, back to the issue. Whether I heat up my car first or a cold start, the car will jerk on slow acceleration. Turning on the air-conditioner will add more jerks, plus a huge power loss. So if I'm driving uphill, the car will climb VERY slow(or even worse slide back down) and suddenly a burst of power kicks in after a few seconds and speed in shock.

A more obvious observation, if I press & depress the acceleration pedal, a normal car will gradually speed up or slow down. But my car will jerk and shockingly slow down or speed up. But at highspeed, the car drives smoothly.

Besides that, my fuel reading is inconsistent when I drive. If I make a left turn, meter will go up, if right, meter drops down hard.

So I made some research, and put some effort to understand most stuff, I've come to the possibilities that:

- fuel pump & float not working properly

-Ignition coil?
-Oil fiter (changed on every service, no difference)
-Spark Plug (changed once, still no difference)

So I hope anyone here with better car knowledge can help me figure this one out. I'm planning to sell the car, but I still want my future buyer to get the best experience from the car.

try two things

loss of power probably due to voltage drop to all the sensors & fuel pump ( old car like that one)

steps

1 add earthing to the engine
2. add positive supply using thick wire to the battery i.e from +ve alternator direct to +ve terminal of the battery.

pls do no 2 first.

good luck

The last time I had jerking issues (exactly the same symptoms as what you are experiencing) on my Mk1 Punto, it was due to a faulty coilpack / ignition distributor. As soon as the car is under any load, i.e. going uphill, downhill, accelerating, it starts jerking.

When was the last time you changed the ignition leads? Check the terminals are clean and free from any arcing deposits (whitish/yellowish/greenish powdery residue) at both ends, spark plug and coilpack.

Thanks for the reply! From my experience, I don't think I ever had it changed before....except for spark plug. But my power does wind up very slow on the passenger side, and the light will dim when you wind down or up the window. Haha

Also clean all the battery terminals..and its connections especially the earth or negative... Then change new battery... Once I bought a battery , new battery suddenly car cannot even start after 6 months need to replace..so the solution until it got replaced was open the earth terminal and reconnect. Now it will start as normal.. Battery Gila Gila.

I went to the mechanic, he said nothing's wrong with the car =/ I remember him saying that even if it's damaged, it's not damaged enough to be fixed yet. So then I decided to sell the car to save myself from all the trouble and stress. And lucky me, someone bought the car already. But thanks for everyone's help here. Really appreciate it!
