Sadly, kumho KU-36 don't do for 225/45/16. They do have size for 215/45/17. From the look of the thread, it will be a noisy tyre but cornering in dry will be Great.

Kumho only have KU-31 for 225/45/16 which is an all rounder tyre. Haven't try cornering yet but fitted it on wife's SUV (235/60/16). So far, ok only lar....Moreover don't think i want to roll over the SUV =))

When I started this thread nearly 3 years ago, the best tyre for the 20VT in my opinion then was the AD07. BUT times have changed. And so as:

- White is the new black; and thus

- 215/45/17 is the new 225/45/16; and therefore

- F1 Asymmetric is the new AD07....!!

Yes, the F1 is the defininitive best tyre for our beloved 20VT on scorching hot customized 17" rims! Dat's da way to go babeee....!

Stay tuned...watch this space....for Breaking News....!

No idea joe. Doubt if they bring in any to malaysia for 225/45/16 but no harm asking the dealer.

roadster, sorry i beg to disagree. the F1s will never have the dry grip or the heat resistance of the AD tires. vice versa, the F1 will probably outgrip the AD in the wet. they're not marketed to the same ppl. F1s is for fast street use, and ADs are for autox/trackdays.

Redd, you may be right on that score Redd. Pals on AD08s still swear by the AD07. Current wet weather however makes me long for an all round performance tire. Interestingly, the F1 reviews by the most authoritative testers still, yes still, rates the F1 head & shoulders above the rest of the field.

Only one way to find out I guess - next week!

Cheers!

Quick review on F1 Asymmetric 215/45/17

Drove 186 kms over past 2 days in different road conditions - Penchala Link, LDP, NKVE, Sultan Ismail and Smart Tunnel. My usual rating - 1.0 (poor) to 7.0 (outstanding) applies. Here goes:

ROADHOLDING - 6.5. Damn good grip in dry when sprinting, braking and particularly fast cornering. Didn't lose traction and composure on uneven, potholish/hellish roads. Grip's as good as the Advan. No chance to check it out in the wet but critical reviews concluded it's even better than in the dry.

RIDE COMFORT - 6.0. Just firm and not bone jarring hard like the Advan. For first time in 3 years, I actually enjoyed driving the 20VT particularly in traffic crawls and on bad, uneven roads.

VALUE FOR MONEY - 7.0. Amazing value at 380/piece as the world's most acclaimed tire for past 2 years. Personally, love the grippy-ness and ride comfort. It's like the Advan grip the comfort thrown in, and the "wet" performance.

CONCLUSION - Strongly recommended if you're switching to 17" - the min F1 size. But very hard to get. None in Klang Valley presently. Got my '09 set from dealer in Klang after much help from Goodyear Msia!

Note

So my ADO7 for sale. Done 6,662 km only. Perfect condition, no cuts, nails before. Never Ulu Yam-ed, Sepang-ed. When new, price was 530/piece. Top offer over 190/piece secures. Please PM. Will post in For Sale section. View at Quick Save.

Cheers!

I should add under "ride comfort" that the F1 is very QUIET - hardly hear whatever road noise even at higher speeds.

Just made a sprint to Solaris Mont Kiara from 1Utama via Penchala Link. Still amazed at the F1 as it confidently wove thru slower moving traffic...and brought back the idiotic grin.....

I've been a big fan of the Eagle F1 GSD3s.... I recent destroyed one of them (my fault) and had to change.

So after thinking this and that, I settled for F1 Asymm and put them up front. Immediately, could feel it's way much quieter. And for RM400 for 215-45-17, what else is better for that price. Haven't really tested the grip levels yet as i need to get my alignment done first. Will update.

Others I considered for 215-45-17 :-
Goodyear RS Sports - RM600 (Quicksave)
Kumho KU-36 - RM450 (Murali@Hypertune)

But ya, I ended up with the Asymm cause I use the car so much more on a daily basis than hardcore runs. Also, for hardcore runs, the F1s is bloody satisfying!

Now to see whether the inner wear will lasts since I can't cross rotate them being asymmetrical.

Anyone can comment on the new F1 and the old F1?

I'm contemplating the new GY F1 Asymmetric but very hard to find in PG.
Found the old GY F1 GSD for RM 390 per pop. 215 45 R17
Is it any good? I'm on PP2 all the time and tried T1-R before.
Never GY....please advise...should I get it?

i never use thai rubber, regardless of the brand or the tread pattern. thai rubber hardens at about 50% wear, and u might as well be driving on concrete blocks.

korean and taiwanese rubber oso better than thai rubber these days.

Michelin PS3 made in Thailand... GY F1 Assy made in China... am using the GY on the 156... now 40% left... slippery when wet... using CSC2 on the coupe... about same 40% left... still good in wet... that's the difference between RM380 per piece and RM660 per piece tires...

and for 225/45/17, one shop quoted me RM830 for Made in France GY F1 Assy...

Hmmm....there appears to be 2 issues on the F1Assym. First, it's effective performance "life" and second, the country of manufacture.

Performance oriented tires like the F1 Assym normally run their best characteristics (braking, wet/dry handling, cornering etc) up to 15k to 20k km at the most depending on driving style following which performance declines sharply. Performance tires are NEVER designed to last long or perform at their max to the very last "botak" thread. That's my experience with PZeros, CSC3s, PS2s, Nito Invos (can write this one off after 10k km). Sure they can run for another 10k to 20k km but they'll lose the performance edge and feel, and you can tell.

Maybe I've the ultimate faith in MNCs and their consistency in TQM BUT the country of manufacture really does NOT make a substantial difference in performance characteristics to justify the high price differential between one made in China and one in Germany. It's really all in the mind that European made tires are better than Asian ones. That's why tire dealers max the country of origin differences to max their profit margins. Even The Stig can't tell the difference when he's thrashing a GTO shod with PZeros Made in Italy or in China.

I know it's a good feel when a tire is emblazoned "Made in France" but a car's performance is not just a function of the tires, and we all know that. Hence, the F1 Assym Made in China is as good as one Made in Germany - really no diff in the greater scheme of a car's performance.

To reiterate my earlier posts, the F1 Assym is the best for our Coops for those with the customized 17" rims. If you can spare the extra cash, my strongest recommendation would be the Thai made PS3. You do get top rate performances from two highly rated tires at prices that are indeed bargain basement!

roadster, i beg to differ. the AD07 i was using previously, and the GY RS Sport that i am on now are literally good til the last drop. i track often and my tires sometimes wear right down to the steel, and usually unevenly, and they are still usable right to the end.

as for no noticeable diff between rubber compounds from different countries, ask the guys who have used both Thai vs German Eagle F1. there's a world of diff. my suspicion is that the thai compounds are more tropicalised, slightly harder but less grippy, and vice versa for the German compounds.

Raitag/Redd, like they always say "your mileage may vary"! And that's assuming a similar tire (say F1 Assm) on a similar car (say a 20vt) driven by the 3 of us. BUT a similar tire (F1 Assm/same profile for all) on different cars (say Gti/325i/FD2R) driven respectively by us will surely yield different tire performance results ceteris paribus. The point is that the most crucial variable of a tire's performance is the type of car not as much as the driver/style/usage/conditions etc or indeed the tire's country of origin. High performance cars in particular (500 horses plus) impose excruciating demands on tires especially when accelerating and braking - it's doesn't quite matter with The Stig or yours truly (L plated in comparison) behind the wheel. Hence the most effective performance from a UHP tire on a high performance car is mainly at the starting bottom of the Bell Curve. When the said Curve plateaus at 10k to 15k km, the tire's performance characteristics should be keenly felt to be wanting even with the remaining 30% to 40% thread life running towards the Curve's tailend. That's the PS2's effective life on Porsches for which it was designed for; and the PZeros on Ferraris for which it was primarily designed for. Sure, the tire can be pushed beyong the Plateau by defying/denying the point of fast diminishing returns.

There's a well known tire retailer in KL and two others in Sin Ming, Spore which specialize in top dollar European rubbers. They enjoy high turnover of those pricey UHPs (check their stocks - sheer eye candy!) from fast car owners who religiously dump their UHPs when they hit the Plateau or 24 months (very low km cars) whichever is the earlier. Now that's what I'm talking about!

I love GYF1;s but on a hot day, they tend to break away pretty easy, which I believe have been fixed in the 'GSD4'. Right now on Hankook EVO S1, because I can't get GYF1A's in 16".

My tyres always UHP and usually last till 20,000km anyways which is about 18 months or driving. By this time the tread is usually close to the wear marker anyway, and I always have some guy who wants to buy them of me.

I've used both Thai and German GY F1 GSD3s and the German one is damn BLOODY good. The thai one, normal only.

As for the GY F1 Assym, the 215-45-17 is made in China. The other sizes are from different countries. Only the 215-45-17 is made in china. Not sure why. Common size and mass production maybe.
